In 1991, very few people were aware of the Caribbean island of Ambergris Caye, off the coast of Belize. Back then, you could have picked up a 1/4-acre beachfront lot for $35,000 or less.

A decade later, the same lot would have cost you at least $150,000.

Today, beachfront lots on Ambergris Caye in the same neighbourhood start at $249,900 and can easily sell for more.

A recent offering had one lot on the market for $360,000. And while property prices may have eroded in the United States, the same isn’t true for some overseas real estate, where prices are still going up and show no sign of stopping.

Each situation is different, but they all have one thing in common… profits backed by real hard assets that won’t vaporize like stocks when the going gets tough… For instance, in 2004, we wrote about beachfront lots on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast that were going for $34,900. Today, that same lot would go for at least $130,000.
